art and about

One of the things I really want to do this time is to get to know more about art, design and culture here – not something Sydney is renowned for more widely. I don't mean that this city does not produce countless creative people, only that it is not obviously a 'central' location of contemporary art and design practice. More straightforwardly, it is not something I know much about. 

So, first step Art and About Sydney - on the theme of 'endangered' as in what has been lost, or in danger of being lost.

the glory that is seawater pools

There are also a number of seawater pools all along the coast, costing varying amounts from 20 cents to $8, and with various rules and facilities. I should mention right away that swimming is not something I like to do. But might just dip my toe in here…

running, running, running

More good-natured crowds again, both running, and cheering on the running. It reminds me of the first time I came to Sydney, with my mother. We were in a similar state of jet-lag, very early rising, so had gone for a walk through the Botanical Gardens towards Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair, when this swarm of runners – (what is the correct collective noun?)  completely engulfed us for several minutes. We just stood stock still, quivering slightly, as if overtaken by a herd of wildebeest. Much too dedicated, energetic and early for us.

falling in love

I have already fallen completely in love with Coogee beach despite its popularity. Mingling with all that good health and sportswear is a marvellous sprinkling of eccentricity....

lets the barbies begin

Turns out there is a food and drink festival at Coogee beach (beach soccer next weekend, so yet more crowdedness). Everyone, to my English eyes, very packed together and loud – but then obviously having a very good time, so I can keep that London cynicism to myself.

In my determination not to give into jetlag, but noticeably disoriented and wobbly, I find that without thinking I have got on a ferry to Watsons Bay; focusing on a single goal of getting take-away fish and chips from the famous Doyles for my lunch.  Then sitting in the glorious sunshine on the sand (like any decent Brit I expect to get excited by sunshine/beach for at least the next 3 months) with that fab view back to the city. Interrupted only by seagulls squabbling.
